If you're from the UK and you believe in freedom of speech and an uncensored interenet, you really need to sign this petition. There are others floating about, but that particular one is the best way to ensure that your voice gets heard. It's hosted on the directgov website and addresses parliament directly. If it gets more than 100,000 signatures, it becomes eligible for discussion in the House of Commons.

Everyone's been getting so worked up over SOPA -- and rightly so -- that ACTA seems to have slipped under the radar. This is hugely problematic, because ACTA is a similar bill, but it has the potential to be far more damaging than SOPA ever could be.

Some people seem to have this misconception that ACTA is the 'European SOPA', but that simply isn't true. It's a global treaty, and it's already been signed by eight countries, including the US, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Europe votes on Thursday. If they vote 'no', the bill will have to be taken back to the drawing board and reformulated, which should buy us some time at the very least.

If you think this doesn't affect you, you're wrong. If ACTA passes, it could well signal the end of the internet as we know it, and that isn't an exaggeration. It's not just about watching movies and television online. If ACTA passes, sites like YouTube, Livejournal, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and even Google and Wikipedia could become impossible to maintain. ACTA would allow ISPs to monitor your net activity and cut off internet access for your entire household if one person is suspected of breaching copyright. Think Big Brother is Watching. I don't think I need to emphasise just how damaging it can be to be without internet access in this day and age, when we rely so heavily on technology.

It's not only bloggers and fandom that would be affected, either. Small businesses, independent film-makers and unsigned musicians who have previously found their niche online would also suffer hugely, and would be at risk of being bullied into submission by Hollywood and multinational corporations under accusations of copyright infringement. All those artists who found fame by uploading covers of songs to YouTube would never have had the opportunity to do so under ACTA, as those cover versions would be prohibited.

I know the internet has its problems, but to my mind it's the single greatest invention to come out of modern times, and it would be an absolute travesty if we were to lose that now. From a personal point of view, I can't even put into words how important this is to me. I've met some of my closest friends through the internet and online fandom, people whom I would likely never have met without it, and it's given me this amazing social support system. I don't want that to end here, and I want to preserve it for future generations so that they can have the same experience and opportunities I've been given through my online interactions.

I know that opinions on the seriousness of copyright infringement and online piracy vary wildly, but that isn't really the point. Internet giants such as Google are opposed to this bill, and it's pretty safe to say that they're not in favour of copyright infringment, as anyone who's ever had a fanvid taken down from YouTube will be painfully aware. Whatever your stance on copyright, this isn't the way to go about dealing with it. This is dangerous legislation that impeaches on some of our most basic human rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech.

So if you're from the UK, please, please sign the petition. If you hail from elsewhere in the world, there may well be similar movements in your own country, but I think the most effective thing anybody can do right now is to keep talking about this. Talk about it on Livejournal, on Twitter, on Tumblr, on Facebook, and anywhere else you can think of. Make sure this issue is never far from people's minds. The internet is an amazingly powerful tool: let's utilise it while we still have the chance.

Please repost and spread the word :)

SAY NO TO ACTA!

Please consider reposting this, especially if you have a large proportion of UK flisties. And please consider spreading the word via other platforms: Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, your own personal network.

So. One of the great things about working in the UK is the prevalence of holiday parties. Everybody at an office or a shop gets together and goes out for one night. Or an afternoon and a night, as is often the case with ellyll's coworkers. (He tends to be the one to go back to the office and hold down the fort for the afternoon. Isn't he a great guy?)

Anyway, this year, British Heart Foundation management decided to do a 'Secret Santa' thing. In kind of an odd way, since we're bringing the presents but we're going to draw for who gets what once we're there. Kind of weird, but whatever, right? In my infinite wisdom, I decided to do something a little different and put together the dried goods for some cookies that I know a lot of the shop loves. Two batches, since I'm bringing one for ellyll's contribution as well.

Massive pain in the bum, but whatever. It works. I just need to find something to put it in, now.

But after mentioning it on Twitter, I've decided to share the recipe here on LJ, too. Besides, it's something to post. And procrastinate on Yuletide. These were originally Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, but the husband prefers them with cranberries. He's a little weird like that.

Because my friends are nuts...

Yes, I've done it. I've been talked into doing fanfic100. Yes, I am crazy. No, these don't have to be done in any specific order. Nor is there a deadline on them. Basically, it's just writing 100 fanfics, even if they're drabbles. These are to help me get writing again.

For the record, I pulled Remy LeBeau/Gambit.

Which language(s) do you currently speak? If you could learn only one other language, what would you choose, and why?

I don't normally answer these, but this one caught my eye.

Dw i'n siarad Saesneg a Chymraeg, ond dw i ddim yn siarad Cymraeg yn dda.

I speak English and Welsh, but I don't speak Welsh well. I understand far more Welsh than I can speak, but I do keep trying. There's a lot of mutations and the vowels are mostly very different from English. (And yes, Welsh has vowels. In fact, Welsh has two more vowels than English.) Needless to say, this makes learning to SPELL in Welsh lots of fun. I'm bad enough at it in English!

I also speak a little Mexican Spanish and, again, understand more than I can speak. Though I do have most of the pronunciation down so if I have a phrase book I shouldn't embarrass myself too badly.

I'm not sure if I'd want to try learning another language right now. I'd just be happy if I could get the Welsh down!

You know what? If your argument basically boils down to, "You aren't doing it/playing the character the way I would do it, therefore you are doing it wrong"?

You're actually the one 'doing it wrong'.

This post brought to you by BRPS and someone I used to play with. NOT aimed at me, thankfully, or you wouldn't be seeing it here.

Okay. Watching the Doctor Who Confidential. Though I doubt they're going to actually say the name for a bit. Editing as I go along.

I'd better explain this one real quick:

Change.org is looking for the top 10 ideas for America that they will present to the new administration on Inauguration Day (More info here). The Global Resources Network is an idea from FirstBook.org to provide the necessary tools to anybody serving kids to create a better educational environment for them, not just in the US but in the world.

There are a lot more causes that can be voted for as well. And yes, you do have to sign up for Change.org in order to vote, but all they ask is your name, e-mail address and a password. That's it. You don't even have to give them your real name if you don't want to.

FirstBook is a good organization, providing books to schools that would otherwise have a hard time getting the funding. And anything that gives students more to read is a good thing in my book.

You know, I was thinking about clicking my friends' page back to two weeks ago, just to see what's been going on. Then I realized that there's just likely to be far too much and, therefore, I should just leave it and let you guys link me to anything really important that I may have missed.

Also, this is my official "I'm back in my flat and glad and sad to be here at the same time" post. Safely returned from Vegas. Can't watch Mamma Mia! or any movie with strong mother-daughter themes for at least six months, I think. But it was worth going, even when I didn't really want to come back at times.

Thanks for all the support, guys. It means a lot to me.

Now I should really catch a nap since I've been up at least 24 hours.

So, we're off to Manchester International Airport tomorrow morning at 5:30. Flight doesn't actually leave until 10:30, but they want you there at least three hours early. Dumb? A little. Bleh.

Flight changes at Chicago. That one I'm a little worried about because we're only there for an hour and a half and we have to go from Terminal 5 to Terminal 1. Hello airport tram service. Damned thing better be fast enough. I don't much fancy calling my sister to let her know that we're going to be late. (Note to self: write down phone numbers just in case.)

I'm sure I'm going to forget something. At this point, though, I don't particularly care. I'm pretty sure I have the important stuff. Anything else can be replaced or lived without until we get back. At this point, it's not even me being practical, it's me being tired. Besides, we're both already planning to supplement our wardrobes when we get there. For one, I SO need a new jacket.

Dealing with this is a day by day thing. Some days I'm fine. But sometimes I'll just see something--like a schmaltzy piece of giftware talking about mothers--and I nearly start crying in the middle of a shop. And the only thing that stops me is how freaking embarrassing that would be.

Boss at BHF looked at me like I was crazy for suggesting I would probably be able to come back to work the week after Christmas. So I amended to the week after New Years. She's got my best interests at heart.

Apparently this has turned very stream of consciousness. Which does not bode well for me tomorrow morning. I'll probably get my second wind somewhere around 4 am, when I'm doing the last minute stuff that can't actually be done until then. Or right after breakfast. Then it's two hours by taxi to Manchester. Fun.

My sister's internet is kind of wonky, so no idea how much I'll be around until I get back. Should return with lots of piccies of Lucie, at least.

And lastly, my dragons. A friend is going to watch and post them while I'm gone, but it can't hurt to put them up here, too. Clicks and views help them grow up. And you don't even have to click if you don't want to! Just loading your friends page helps them out.

I can't really manage coherence concerning the subject just yet. Which means there's probably going to be a longer post from me sooner or later. Just not at the moment.

Some of you already know about it because we've talked online already, but my mom died on Thursday. It was very unexpected and I think everybody is still kind of in shock. ellyll and I are flying back to the States as soon as we possibly can. I don't currently know how long we'll be staying. Heck, I don't even know when we're going to fly out, though yesterday was spent in Liverpool getting ellyll's passport renewed. That, thankfully, didn't take as long to do as we were afraid it would, though, which is something.

So I'm going to end up disappearing for a bit. My bosses are both very understanding about it, which I'm incredibly lucky to have them.

So, yeah. It's kind of a scramble at the moment and flailing and I just really need to get back home and see my sister and just...I don't even know right now. Back to the flailing.

Thank you to everybody who has given me their condolences. It's been a great help, having people to lean on right now, even if I don't know more than a handful of you in person.

Via athousanderrors:

I don't live in the States any more, but this still affects us all. Anybody who has friends or relatives in places where they can't marry because of their sexual orientation. The following YouTube video is Keith Olbermann's Special Comment on Prop 8. Such a quiet, impassioned speech that I found myself tearing up and agreeing with the man.

I'm lucky. I know I am. And like Keith, I just want more people to have the chance to have the same chances at happiness that I have. Because everybody deserves that.

Why do I not have an icon that would really work for this post? Oh well. You get Aziraphale and Crowley, then.

Okay. I'm not from California, so I couldn't have voted on Prop 8 even if I'd been in the States. It doesn't mean I'm not interested in how things are going to fall out concerning it.

From colubra:

ACLU filed an initial writ petition this morning to block the proposition from altering the Constitution.

http://www.aclu.org/lgbt/relationships/37706prs20081105.html

The most important part cut-and-pasted below:

The California Constitution itself sets out two ways to alter the document that sets the most basic rules about how state government works. Through the initiative process, voters can make relatively small changes to the constitution. But any measure that would change the underlying principles of the constitution must first be approved by the legislature before being submitted to the voters. That didn't happen with Proposition 8, and that's why it's invalid.

This was posted yesterday and I've been distributing the link far and wide because people need to know that things aren't over yet.

And in breaking news today, courtesy of knitmeapony? No on Prop 8 Protest March outside the LDS Temple in Los Angeles. Link goes to a streaming digital news report for LA's NBC affiliate and, after this afternoon California time will probably not be covering this any more.

Apparently Mormons funneled something like sixty percent of the monetary support for Yes on Prop 8, so the protest is at least going in the right place.

People are still fighting. Nothing is over yet.

As a follow up to last night, since the PC came by the shop while I stopped by this morning. The lady has been booked and admitted to the shoplifting. Apparently she's embarrassed by having done it. She'll be at Magistrate's Court on the 8th. Doubtful I'll be called to testify, but it's good to know about.

Toni, the manager, was gone yesterday afternoon, but she was in this morning. She said I did a good job and all. Sliiiight reprimand for having confronted the shoplifter, which I shouldn't have done. Which makes sense because she could have had a weapon and could have hurt me. I was just running on adrenaline at the time and wasn't thinking straight.

So, incident report to fill out this afternoon. Bleh. Ah well. All's well that ends well, yeah?

Well, somewhat, at least. I need to tell a stupid coworker story.

As most people know, I volunteer at the British Heart Foundation shop in town and have done for a year and a half. Now that the school year has started, though, we're getting in some new volunteers. Also, being September, Head Office have sent us our giftware for the Christmas season. (I know, I know. It's still four months away. They still want it out now, along with our Christmas cards.)

Two of these fairly new volunteers were up on the shop floor on Friday, handling the till and dealing with the customers. Someone buys one of our dog statuettes and the girl on the till calls downstairs to ask the Assistant Manager to bring up the box for it.

So, the Assistant Manager goes digging around and finds it, then brings it up. While he's there, he looks at the boxes we have up under some of the shelving.

"Hey," he says. "There are some over here."

"Yeah," the girl replies. "We looked in them. The dogs are still in those, though."

...

Yes, I headdesked a lot at that. Along with the fact that the till was twelve pounds down on Friday. No idea where it's gone other than the fact that the girl had no freaking clue how to actually do it correctly. So, she's going to be pulled off this coming week. We can't be losing that much money and not be able to track it down.

Still working at WH Smith, too, so my days are at least pretty busy. And Welsh classes start up again soon. So that's going to make things even busier, but I don't mind so much.

So, it's bee a long time since I've actually posted about life here. Not that there's much going on and I should probably post about work but I'm not in the right frame of mind to do so.

So? Y'all get pictures! Because it's been a good, long while since I've posted pictures of my niece (mostly because her mommy hasn't sent me many. Silly Mommy.). Also, I just got off the phone with my mom and sister and Lucie's making some very adorable noises. Just not into the phone. She kisses phones, she smiles at phones. She licks phones. But she won't talk into them yet. And apparently she likes climbing the stairs. Which is making things interesting for Grandma and Mommy.

Picture time!Collapse )

Thank you so much to everybody who has been clicking. The white is close to growing up, the vine should be close and one of the eggs has hatched. So, thank you so much!

Off to do my clicking duty once this is posted.

I'd like to thank kinotech for bringing this to my attention.

Basically, there's a hack that was unveiled at the Defcon hacking convention in Vegas that will be released at the end of the month. It exploits a security weakness with Gmail which, thankfully, seems to have a fairly easy fix. The instructions for the fix are in the post that's being linked to. If you have a Gmail account, I would suggest checking your settings and making the change.
